Since 2016, I have been Director of Writing Workshops Los Angeles, a private writing school for the brave, enthusiastic, and talented. I received my Ph.D. in English from the City University of New York Graduate Center, and I am currently Lecturer in Writing at the California Institute of Technology. I've worked as a writing instructor for several universities in New York and Los Angeles, including Brooklyn College (CUNY), Loyola Marymount University, and the Polytechnic Institute of New York University.
My writing has appeared in The Collagist, FORTH Magazine, Angel's Flight • Literary West, DUM DUM Zine, Cease, Cows, and Crony, and my essay "Thoughts on Time After Viewing Christian Marclay's 'The Clock'" was recently included in the Norton anthology of contemporary nonfiction, Brief Encounters. I have reviewed fiction and nonfiction, primarily focusing on music and Los Angeles history, for the Los Angeles Times and Los Angeles Review of Books. I served as a judge for the fiction and first fiction awards of the Los Angeles Times Book Prizes in 2013 and 2014. I was also a Ucross Foundation writer-in-residence during the spring 2014 session and a finalist for the 2014 Baltic Writing Residency.
My photography has appeared in Redivider, Gesture Literary Journal, FORTH Magazine, Angels Flight • literary west, Bartleby Snopes, the blogs for Ploughshares and the Los Angeles Review of Books, and Print Oriented Bastards.
I teach fiction and creative nonfiction at all levels for Writing Workshops Los Angeles. Projects workshopped in my classes have won their authors a PEN Emerging Voices fellowship, the Thomas A. Wilhelmus Editors’ Award from Southern Indiana Review, a Sustainable Arts Foundation Promise Award, the New Southerner annual literary contest, and an award from the Los Angeles Book Festival. My students and clients have published essays in venues such as Slice Magazine, BOMB, The Iowa Review, The Rumpus, Salon, The Chattahoochee Review, Hippocampus Magazine, Lumina, Public Books, The Hairpin, and Writers Tribe Review. They have been awarded residencies at the MacDowell Colony (including a Stanford Calderwood Fellow) and 360 Xochi Quetzal, and several have attended the Bread Loaf, Tin House, and Squaw Valley writers’ conferences.
In 2013, I was one of the founders of WordCraft LA, a writing consultant collective in Los Angeles. As a professional editor, I have worked on novels, nonfiction manuscripts, dissertations, book proposals, screenplays, web copy, product pitches, and marketing materials. My clients include literary journal The Rattling Wall, the New York City Health & Hospitals Corporation, CMH Records, ScriptShark (a subsidiary of The New York Times), Aesa Jewelry, Roxbury Publishing, and graduate students around the world.
